Here's the approach:

1) Look at your home site
2) Mark off where you want the house
3) Make the rest SHOP

.... and you still won't have enough!

I've got one car, with a 30x40, and when the car is apart in the shop there's no room to do anything else.

Here is some pictures for of my dads shop first couple during building with my SS in it to get you an idea of size with a car in there its 40X 20

Next picture shows how fast it fills up its better then that now can fit my dads truck in with some room around it.

Good luck and always build bigger then you think you need and the bigger garage door is nice also.

I love that idea, wish I could have done it that way.

I dunno, sometimes I make a pretty big stink in my shop, glad it's away from the house. For example, painting can stink things up pretty fierce. Also, sometimes when welding, I've smoked some wood (that was holding the metal I was welding). That can stink. I'm glad I can throw down some paint, walk away from the shop, and not have to come back until the fumes are gone.

.

I have a cot in my office. When working late, wife out of town, racing early or late & too tired to drive home.
It's sealed pretty good, could be better. Even running drag cars & diesel work trucks, it's never been that bad.
I would suggest windows on all sides. I was looking at the short long style for new shop.
Ventilation would sure help. My shop has zero windows & one door. I would think with decent drywall &
maybe a plastic barrier it would not get upstairs. Separate entrance would help also.

My dad and I share a 60' x 60' and if I had more room I could find stuff to put in it! Go as big as you have room(land) and can afford, especially if you think you will be there from now on(no chance of having to move).

I noticed nobody here is from South Florida, wonder why..!! I would love a work shop, though I feel fortunate to have a single car garage after 10+ years of living in apartments. Big enough for the motorcycle and the tools. I've never had a car sleep indoors before - at any house.
