Default I need a quote lesson

How do I quote just a small part of what someone wrote without getting the boxes?

I did that just by deleting what I didn't want. Sorry if that's not what you meant.

When I typed the thread it had [ ] [ / ] brackets in it. They didn't come through when I submitted the post.

I just copy and paste what they said and put in some quotation marks. Usually I make the quote bold just for the heck of it.
