What kind of outages are you referring to - the servers being completely unreachable, or 'database unavailable' errors? Some time in the vicinity of 3:15-4:15, I got the 'database unavailable' page, so just checking whether that's part of the outages you were talking about or a separate incident

Hey John, today's date is 1/5/05, not 12/5/05.

Same type of outages on cz28.com. I am guessing maybe an F-body hater found an exploit in vBulletin, and decided to have some fun.

Found this tonight John, when searching:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted at (null):0 (tried to allocate 35 bytes) in /var/www/html/forums.3.0.3/search.php on line 1714

...this could be a partial cause or combination effect.

Naw, that's an easy one - hard memory limit set in the configuration to avoid having scripts run away and such the memory dry. I bumped it up in last nights events, we'll see if that's enough to hold everyone's search results.

Actually there IS a minor issue that as of yet hasn't been exploited (to my knowledge) that vBulletin has released a fix for. There's also the well-known PHP exploits with versions prior to 4.3.10, but the system has been upgraded there as well. There was, however, a big attempt by someone to SSH to the box using a laughable dictionary attack on common usernames. I nixed that one easily enough though, I simply firewalled out all but three small network segments from reaching port 22.

Yes, I've heard of the vB exploits, as well as, the PHP exploits. Oh brother...what some people will attempt to do from boredom or jealousy.

Whatever it was, appears to have been a temporary deal. We're sustaining higher usage today with no ill effects at all. Heck the servers are idling nice and cool (730+ users right now, server loads are at 1.12 and 1.13).

The flux capacitor must have been low on headlight fluid.
