Default Archive?

Nineball posted this in a thread now closed:
Most sites purge threads older than 6 months old or archive them so that they cannot be replied to. We have considered those options, but also feel that there are years of good tech info here that should not be discarded. The searches are what tax the database.
I think this idea is worthy of some discussion. If threads say a year old and older were archived and searchable with a different search function than the forums, the tech info in those threads would still be accessible. If a person wanted to discuss matters from an archived thread, he could start a new thread and just copy text or reference the archive. If it's possible to have two different search modalities for the forums and the archives, it could really unburden the site. It would definitely beat the Google search.

That would require effort to be diverted from current projects aimed to fix this issue. Current projects will provide permanent fixes, that would only be temporary.

Did anything ever come up from this? Maybe I'm just a neanderthal and I have trouble using toilets much less websites but I did'nt notice any result and think there is loads of great info in the archives, but the loads are so great, it's hard to wade through.

There's no need for archives - all of our posts are online and accessible.

No. Our entire database is kept live.

Where did you get the idea that it was archived? There ARE archives, but that doesn't mean we remove the archived posts from the live DB, it just means we have a backup

It means you can't see it. There are a variety of possible, but suffice it to say you don't have the privileges to view that thread.

If you find some examples, PM me and I'll get you the details. Many times they're threads that have been sent to the graveyard for whatever reason.
