Default Scammer on the for sale forum?

I was trying to sell my car on the classified thread and ran into a so called member that joined 2 days ago (1-27-2008). He claimed that he was interested in buying my car and we settelled on a cash price. He then requested the vin number of my car to provied for his bank, and this would enable him for a loan. Did not give him the vin, and then replied "Are you that serious about the cash; I dought that it is legal to bring 12k on a plane." I then replied with more questions and ask to contact him by phone. After this reply, I have not heard from him sence.

I guess my question is, does this happen offten to anyonelse on this forum?

His member name is McJapurai

I can't speak for the honesty of the buyer but most banks want the VIN to run a carfax to verify its not a salvage title, not stolen and verify the car doesn't have a lien on it. The VIN of a car and its owner is pubic information so he is not gaining any significant info on you that he couldn't get in another way if I have your tag number i can get it. If he starts asking for bank info or SSN then I'd worry but what he is asking is reasonable. Again I can not verify the honesty of the buyer so if you feel its wrong then walk away. Just my .02.

If buying become too much of a pain .. especially when I have travel X far to get it, I'll look for an easier transaction. My guess is he probably just saved himself anymore drama and took his buying elsewhere. Disclosing a VIN should be mandatory (and 99.9% of the times it is) before the purchase.

I would advise continue to stay skeptical but you really should become more familiar with automobile sales.

I dont see the problem. But whatever, I think you are just being a little paranoid, and it was already said, but I would have backed out if you didnt want to give up the vin too...

Dont mean no disrespect but its usually the other way around. The guy that refuses to give the VIN is hesitant because hes a scammer. The guy probably wants a carfax from it befor he fly's out to pick up the car. I would give him the VIN and make a face to face transition. Or if still hesitant on giving it out tell him he can run the car fax when he flys out and if it comes up as a salvaged title when he's there you'll pay to fly him back. Wich you wouldnt have to ever do since you know its a clean title. Good luck with your sale!

There are some scams out there but its best to just talk to the interested buyer by phone. Usually people ask a ton of questions before they buy a car and are prepared to get back on a plane without a car because they didn't do a lot of research first.

I think your the one whos wrong here. Joining date aside, you can walk up to any car in the world and get its VIN number. It's right there under the windshield. I wouldn't jump on a plane with $12,000 either. You should make an arrangement for a cashiers check. Just have him give you the check number and call his bank to verify it's real.

Don't be such a worry wort.
