What are Infractions & Points?

What are Infractions & Points? I cannot find any information regarding "infractions" and/or "points".
I was accused of a Classifieds rules infraction and given 5 points, and I'd just like to know what that even means, or what it can mean, since I cannot seem to locate any info on the subject.
I'm not trying to dispute the infraction, even though it is all but impossible to "harrass a seller" who's ad is dormant and/or abandoned, I just am curious as to where this leads.
I've been a regular contributor to multiple forums since 2000, and have never been issued any warnings, bans, or infractions of any type, and I was pretty surprised about getting a PM notification that I had committed an infraction. I actually moderate on a few forums as well, Classifieds sections on one or two, and I actually delete any obvious dormant For Sale Ads rather than punish those who happen to notice that fact and state their opinion or suggestion. I assume my mistake was making the reply to a vendor, which in retrospect was probably a poor choice.
So hopefully without any further repercussions or infractions directed at me, can someone take a minute and explain the infraction/point system so that it doesn't happen again?
