Default Looking for a "weekend car"...

Hi all,

I'm lookin' to get into a weekend car and have been looking at 2002 Camaro SS/Firebird WS6 or an 04 - 06 GTO.

Any suggestions on what would be easy to mod and still pass smog. This would be a "weekend car" rather than a daily driver.

Thanks!

Ws6 is what i'd get. I'd be worried that I can't get parts for the GTO as time goes by.
Good luck

As far as labor goes the engine bay stuff will be easier on the GTO's (more room), but the solid rear and its suspension would be easier on the F-bodies. It all depends on what you are looking for.

If you go GTO deff pick up a later version with the LS2. They can make some good power with a lil more displacement and better heads. On another note the GTO is heavier.

Firebirds can fit a larger tire out back with little/no massaging. The GTO has the least ability to fit a large tire.

What activities are you looking to participate in on the weekend? For the street stuff in a straight line, I say a stalled/built auto 12-bolt F-body is a hard combo to beat when done correctly. They can hook damned near anywhere and you can shed weight alot easier than the GTO's.

I've been looking at alot of different options lately.

I'm probably not going to be drag racing or anything...just really miss the rumble of a small block V8 and shifting through the gates.

Does anyone have experience with the guys at "Camaro King" in Sylmar? I was checkin' out their website and it looks like they've got alot of F-Bodies.

There is a lot of controversy about that place ands it's owner. They used to clone SS's from Z-28's and switch the vins to sell them as real SS's. Plus all the cars on their site are long gone last i heard, they keep them on there as a draw or are too lazy to update their site.

The stripe package they put on everything is cheap and burns into the paint after not too long. The interiors..... well just look at the pictures

I've been looking all over the place.

Any suggestions on where to look for a decent milage F-Body?

Have been looking on all the car websites (i.e. cars.com, carmax, etc.), looking in the papers.

Hey Nacho,

I do like the Monte. Lately I've been fueling an obsession for the F-Bodies.

After putting alot of thought into it and searching for the bolt ons available, I've decided to go for one of the F-Bodies.

As far as the 1999 thru 2002 Camaro SS/Firebird WS6, is there one particular year that I should stay away from?

Id go for the 2001-2002. The get the LS6 intake and ditch the EGR crap.

1998 has weaker rod bolts, oil pump, and perimeter bolt heads.

Looks like the LS6 intake will add on about 15 ponies.

Any suggestions on air intake systems and tuner units?

I grabbed a copy of the latest Camaro Performers magazine and they mention the K&N FIPK intake and a SCT X3 Tuner.

As far as tuners go I've also looked at the Diablo Sport Predator.

the only tuner you should use is a custom dyno tune from a reputable shop. The handheld tunes are not great for these cars.

Skip the tuner and the K&N FIPK kit. A simple K&N drop in filter and lid will do the job. Most lids are about the same, unless you go for the large mouth versions (100mm-104mm). Plus with the money saved from not buying the FIPK kit you could buy a catback or used cam

Once you get everything together hit up a professional tuner that uses HPTuners or LS1Edit to do a Dyno tune or a Street tune. Either of these will be miles ahead of handheld tuners.

Also look into the free mods for these cars, they do help and give you a chance to get familiar with the mechanics and placement of stuff in the engine bay and chassis/suspension.
