Default experience with smog in cali..

I've heard that even with a pretty good size cam, an ls with long tubes will pass the sniffer given that it has cats welded in. This true? Any one had any experience? I know it won't pass visual, just wondering if it'll pass the sniffer..

I dont remember the overlap needed but a mild cam around a 224 or 228 with LTs can pass no problem

I passed with L/T and an MS3 cam but I did pay a little extra. I honestly don't know if the operator did anything to change the numbers so it would pass the sniffer.

MS3 will not pass, especially with the tune that was on your car... regardless of running cats or not... the operator must have fooled with some stuff..

It will not pass without cats. The cam size needs to be relatively small. I passed with a 224/224 114, and I know people have passed with slightly larger. It's all about overlap. You can also run alcohol/premium mix in the tank to cut down on emissions.

In 2013 there will no longer be the sniffer test for smog for cars I think '00 and newer. Google AB 2289.

-4* overlap is what you'll want, but that means nothing without a good tuner!

If you're wanting it to pass smog, you'll likely be running stock manifolds or shorty headers which means you want more exhaust than intake duration like a 220/228 114lsa, 218/226 113lsa, etc.....

He said he knows it won't pass visual. Probably has a friend. The visual can be overlooked, the sniffer is more difficult to sneak by.

I went to a Pay to Pass place a few smogs ago and the guy put my car on first and said if I had rear O2 sims, I would have passed. Maybe he could have fooled it a little in my direction, I do not know the details, but he did say it would pass.

I have LTs, no cats, small cam.
