It's finally working! Hey guys, I'm an UI engineer by trade, and gear-head by night, and decided a while back that I could mix things up a bit. I saw the "multifunction display" in the new GT-R, and thought it looked pretty cool, and that I'd like to have something like that for my T/A. Well, after a moderate amount of hacking, this is what I've come up with. It's still a very early and rough version of it, but it actually works. Image of the UI http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...der/kcar-1.png Video of the UI hooked up to my car, and driving a bit http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o..._VIDEO_003.jpg The plans forward is to add more screens to monitor different values. Add DTC diagnostics, and maybe a virtual quarter-mile. I'll also look into adding media playback in it, so that it eventually can replace the radio. Whaddy'a think? |
nice i like it |
great idea! how did u get it to correspond with ur car? its connected by cable? |

 it sounded like a "ping" from a submarine at one point... |

I'm a programmer by trade, so it's what I do. :) There's a ton of programs out there for hooking up your PC to your car. I use the hardware from http://www.obdpros.com/, and they include a bunch of (ugly, but working) software with their interfaces. |

TTT for the day-crowd. What gauges/functionality would you guys want to see in something like this ? |
A/F ratio, oil pressure, volts, maybe gas tank level, trouble code readouts, clickable UI (touchscreen support??) those are a few off the top of my head. Maybe options to link to other programs (i.e. GPS support)? Save the carputer guys some money... :) EDIT: P.S. This is freakin' awesome. I can't tell you how long I've wanted a car with something like this. Oh, got another idea - 0-xMPH times (unless it's not too accurate) |
Great job. |
1/4 mile passes would be bad ass too! :D i don't know if you would do that tho lol |
Here's an update for you guys. I added two new screens. Screen two: * Engine Coolant temp * Torque converter slip * Engine oil pressure (not working) * Engine load (in %) * Transmission oil temp (uncalibrated) * Transmission oil pressure (also uncalibrated) Screen 3: * DTCs * Battery voltage Future plans: In the immediate future I'll add graphing, so you could get a graph over your RPMs (for example) over a period of time. I'm also thinking of how to implement an MPG meter I could rather easily add the 0->xxxMPH functionality, and probably a virtual 1/4 mile as well with a RWHP estimation. It won't be perfect, but I think I could get it within 5% accuracy or so.. I'll probably end up integrating some form of MP3 playing as well. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...er/KCar-01.png http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...er/KCar-02.png http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...er/KCar-03.png |
Sick! :) |
That could go hand-in-hand with this: http://www.ohgizmo.com/2008/10/13/mi...eeds-only-usb/ if you don't have a monitor on your headunit.. Touchscreen would be pimp though.. |
F'in awesome! |
Nice. What are you writing it in? I have a carpc and use the roadrunner frontend, which is very popular. It might be better if you could integrate it into that or something similar since a lot of work has already been done on carpc applications. |
I can't view photobucket at work, but it sounds awesome. I'll check it out when I get home. Edit: It looks really good. Well done. |
damn that is sick. i can put a computer together in 20 minutes, but programing... i dont know that stuff at all. that is some A+ work right there nice job! |
Thanks guys, I'll probably end up going the CarPC route, but not in the regular sense. I'm prototyping my own CarPC, which this will become a part of. What's already in the plans and semi-working is iPod integration (blows any headunit ipod integration clear out of the water), as well as XM-Radio. Once I've got that working in the lab, it'll all be put into a PC, and mounted in the car. I'll keep you posted |
