98 Vette 119k miles, A4, average condition, all stock, "does have a rattle in the engine" they say...I talked to the dealer and he claims it sounds like a top end tap, possibly lifter. So what do you all think, is it worth the 7900 they're asking?

Until you find out for sure, no. Might need valvetrain work, might need a rebuild. Either way, unless you're good at making repairs, farming the work out could cost $$$ + aggravation.
Rattles like that can turn out to be a rod bearing. One guy posts pics on here of a piston/rod that came out of a car he bought off a girl. Rod is shattered, piston beat up. That was the noise. She was driving around with that "rattle" for a while b4 she sold it to him.

Yeah the work will be done by a friend and I regardless....thats not what im worried about so much. I was thinking IF I had to actually go buy another shortblock, thats $1k or less, so I'd have roughly $9k wrapped up in a LS1 Vette. IF I was lucky and it was a lifter, I've got a set of fairly new ones, all I'd have invested is gaskets/bolts.
