Question To build, or sell?

I picked up on a good deal a stock 1998 Z28. I grabbed it because i do want another car, had the cash, and the guy was in a bad spot.

It's an A4, 83k, Red, T-tops, power, cloth seats, stock except for a catback and 18in chrome rims. Has a clean carfax and some wear and tear issues but nothing too bad. Drivers window out of track and a weak window motors along with some nicks and scratches.

I want another car but not sure if this is it. I know i can find something done and save myself time and effort, so I've been debating 3 different options.

1. fix widow track, motors, service, clean and then sell for a hopeful profit.

2. same as above but finish exhaust, add a lid, ls6 intake, tune at New Era then sell, hoping to increase profit.

3. fix everything and build, probably do a heads/cam, tranny, stall, tune and 125 wet shot... then go kill junkstangs.

Any insight would be great, or at minimum what would it fetch with just doing option 1?

Thanks!

Could use a few more details about the history of the car and the maintenance. The mileage isn't too bad unless the Z28 was beat on. The problems you describe aren't major but the costs still add up unless you can do things yourself. A 'fair' condition 1998 Z28 with those miles would normally fetch around $6,000, maybe even $7,000 if it presented well. If the paint and interior are 'good' that would certainly help. If you do fix everything up and bring that Z28 into the 'good condition' area, don't expect a price any higher than $7,000 though. That's optimistic too, not a certain deal where people are banging down the door to buy the car. Whatever you decide, good luck!

The previous owner was not a car guy and thought it was super fast bone stock and didn't feel it needed anything other than the catback for sound. He put his efforts into a kenwood head deck, amp, box and chrome aftermarket rims/tires. He did other stupid stuff like paint the vents red so i don't think it was at the track or abused. I had to drive it an hour one way to get it home and it made it with no problems. He said he stayed up on oil changes and basic maintenance so i can only assume its in good condition overall.

I appreciate the advice. I think at the moment I'm leaning towards getting it clean and serviced and post it for sale in the spring. Of course when spring comes after this long crappy NY winter i could easily change my mind.

If i did one or two extras to help make it attractive, so it could sell near the 6k mark, what would anyone suggest? Tires/rims or maybe good quality full exhaust?

Sounds like a decent car, Not sure what to tell you as we have no idea what you have stuck into it at this point. If you paid $5,000 + then I would probably just mod it & keep it - If you are well south of that $$$$ you could probaply make a proffit just by fixing the little stuff. I wouldn't add the aftermarket stuff as you will likely not see 50% return on that stuff.

4th gens are not an easy car to flip and profit, the market just isn't there anymore. The miles are right (too many for a collector but not so many that its worn out) so keep it and modify it to your hearts content.
