Default 2002 z06

Found a 2 owner, black/black Z w/ 83k on it. Car is an overall 9, cosmetically, 100% stock. Needs a glovebox latch and an oil pressure sending unit. NO accidents.

I've got a sale price of $16.5, but I have to travel (will probably cost me a day's time and $3-400 in expesnses).

Buy it?

Edit: there was a mileage discrepancy a few years ago, it seems awfully out of place and could just be a clerical error. How much impact would this have?

The mileage discrepancy shows up on the Carfax? What does it say?

I would be a little leery about buying a car with a mileage discrepancy simply because it will always be a question mark that will need to be explained to any future owners. I would be worried that even though it could easily be a clerical error, it would hurt the value compared to a similar, clean titled car. As a buyer, I would have a hard time paying top dollar or even buying a car with something like that on its title when other clean title cars are available.

I'm going to pass once I saw that. I'm sure I could follow up on it and prove it's an error, but then I'm constantly having to explain it to a potential buyer.

It would also depend on what the actual difference in mileage is. I wouldn't be very concerned over something under a couple thousand miles. The car is probably fairly priced for a Z06 of this mileage but I think the better values are in the ones with 20K to 45K miles. Those do a lot better on resale in the event you decide the car isn't quite for you. And the mileage premium is well in your favor on those cars. Getting a 25K mile car for only an extra $4K-6K more is a good deal (ie 3X the wear and tear on one car vs. the other).

Actually the mileage was around a 40k discrepancy, which actually seems as though it would be easier to show it was a mistake. It is a 2 owner car, and every other mileage entry seems to be in line. I talked to a buddy who is a dealer and he says that he literally sees those mistakes all of the time. The mileage discrepancy would basically be that the owner put 40k on in one year, which is a total anomaly of the rest of the mileage entries.

I agree with you on the lower mileage cars, there's a local one by me w/ 57k on it for $20k, with service records, but it's out of my price range.

If you're saying that the 83K Z06 could/should be a 43K mile car then I would seriously consider it at $16.5K. There's really no downside as it's already priced as a 80K mile car. The title info could always be corrected. But, if that car is really showing -40K miles (ie 123K miles actual) then I wouldn't touch it. It really comes down to the condition of the car, how it drives, etc.

I've only seen videos, pics of it. I actually think the mileage is spot-on, 83k, given the mileage listings of the carfax, except for the outlier that had it listed at 105k 4 years ago. All of the other readings look consistent (like the mileage was driven in a consistent manner every time it was inspected). I just think it was an error at one inspection/service.

The odd thing is that carfax shows that there "is not a mileage discrepancy" in the checks, it notes that it could possibly be a clerical error.

In the video he sent, the interior looks really nice, it idles smooth, no issues and sounds good. For the prices I've been seeing, it seems like a great deal. I checked autotrader, CF, CL, ebay, cars.com, and only thing I'm seeing in the $16k range are 01s, mileage over 100k, and/or damaged.
