98 trans am Hey guys,
I've been out of the f-body scene for about 9 years. I'm looking to pick up another one as a weekend car. Found a 98 trans am with 136k miles with auto trans. Car is completely stock. The guy said the clear coat was coming off so the car had been repainted. He also said the oil level sensor and knock sensor(s) were bad. I believe code p0327 he said. Would you buy a car with this many miles? He is wanting $6000 but says price is negotiable. What's it worth?

For an automatic and that mileage I would think in the $4K-$5K range if nothing major were wrong with it. You could easily dump several thousand into such a car for electrical, AC, tires, suspension and steering, exhaust, fluid changes, and drive train....and then wished you just bought one with a lot lower miles to begin with. The best value in these cars are '98-00's with 35K-70K miles. The best performance bang for the buck would be the base LS1 '98/'99 Firebirds and Z28's.
The repaint is not a plus for me considering there are lots of garaged examples that have original paint without any issues. I'd rather look in the $7K-$10K price range for something cleaner with half the mileage. Another member here just picked up a 1998 WS6 with 40K miles last month for only $9K. While that was a sweet deal, it's the exception. Check out other offerings in the "what's it worth" section over the past 12 months to give you a flavor for what's up today.
