Default 96 SS 6 speed Convertible

I have a customer of our dealership interested in selling me his car. Its a white on black leather, white top, 6 speed 96 SS convertible. The car has 29k miles on it. His late wife is the original owner. It has a Hurst shifter, SLP 2OTL exhaust, the SS mats and a couple small items. It is 100% original, with newer tires on the original 16" SS wheels.

My wife and I are intrigued by it, as we don't have a convertible. I considered the possibility of selling my WS6 to make room for it. In terms of condition, other than some light surface rust on the contol arms, K member etc., there is no rust whatsoever. The dash pad is cracked in 2 spots, the outter driver's bolster is worn but not ripped. Otherwise, it seems perfect.

He wants $25k for it. I am politely trying to tell him he is way off base with his number, and he is quoting recent Mecum Auction sales and Hagerty values. I think the car is worth $15k tops. Who is more crazy...him or me??

I think $15K would be a strong offer. You can buy a 30K mile '98-'00 LS1 SS M6 for $13K-$15K. I've seen the 2002 LE Anniversary Verts (which are cool looking) at around $15K with lower miles. Why waste time and money on a much less desirable 1996? I'd probably be at $12K. If they are talking Mecum numbers, figure a couple of years before they figure it out. For $20K you can probably buy that 2002 LE M6 anniv vert with 10K miles for $20K. How could a 1996 with more miles be worth more?

While I'd bet a white over white convertible is pretty scarce....it's also not very exciting. Just too much white....with nothing breaking it up.

I have to be honest here that even $15k is high. I love our F-bodies but same year C4 Corvettes with similar mileage can be had in the mid-teens. Lower teens is more realistic unless it's a must have car for you. Good luck with your negotiations but the owner seems 'out of touch' with his thoughts on pricing. Not even close.

I don't disagree with what you guys are saying. As I said, I figured it for $15k as absolute top dollar...I don't think I would pay over 12 for it.

I appreciate the backup...I figured he was kinda nuts on the price.

Wishful thinking perhaps. Inflated appraisals by 'others' doesn't help his thinking either. Condition #1 cars may fetch the big $$ but his car is not a #1 car.. Some folks just don't understand the difference. I think you are spot on with your thinking.
