Question Adding material to mounting face? (Built-in spacer)

Is it possible to add material to the mounting face of a rim to give it a spacer-like effect? I've always loved the 18" ZR1s, but don't like the big 56mm offset. I don't want to run a spacer, so I was wondering if it's possible to either a). just add extra material and grind it flush, or b). maybe weld a spacer onto the wheel itself. I'd of course run longer studs and do everything to make it as safe as possible. This is on a car that maybe sees 1000 miles a year and is just a weekend cruiser. Anyone heard of this?

Yes, running a spacer would be easier, but I'm just thinking it would be safer if the spacer were part of the wheel itself. It would eliminate any slop caused by a spacer.
