Default GTO spare-AGAIN...

A friend of mine noticed I ride around with a GTO spare in my car. I need it as it’ll clear the SSBC front brakes I have (the stock spare does not). As it’s tire is a larger diameter than the stock spare, it does not fit into the spare tire well in the quarter panel. He suggests that I get a motorcycle tire (he’s a bike dude), such as a 120/70/ZR17. It’ll fit and be a way better tire than the temp tire. They can be had starting at 60-80 bucks. As a "Z" rated tire, it’s good to 149 MPH-my car will NEVER do that LOL... These tires are pretty robust.

Before anybody gets into the "it’s the wrong wheel for the car" issue, I do need this as a spare and it fits the car with no issues. I did use it one time as a spare with no drama. These are pretty decent rims and fitment aside, quite a few here have been using them as front drag wheels without problems on F-Bodies and Corvettes. Ugly yes, but as they clear my brakes, they’re a necessity and fit my needs well.

Comments good or bad but don’t flame me boys.....

I am going to bet that a streetbike tire designed to support a 400-500 lb bike will be a poor choice for the 1700 or so lbs on the front of an F-body.

I agree. The average load rating for a motorcycle tire in this size range is 400 to 500 pounds. I didn't think of this, thanks SS.

The M&H Front Runner 26.00 x 4.50-17 tire looks like a good alternative, I'm sending an email to them to get it's load rating.

I'd have to buy two so this might make for a decent set of front drag skinnies if I get a second rim. A search here on LS1tech shows it's been done a few times with good results.

M&H also has a radial version:

I used the M&H frontrunners with the GTO spare wheels on my '06 GOAT with no problems at the track whatsoever. RPM Outlet also had the best price on the M&Hs.
