tire sizes

can anyone explain to me in lamen terms what the tire sizes mean.....ive figured out the wheel sizing and backspacing and offsets.....just confused on the tire sizes . thanks

275 mm wide
40mm sidewall height
ZR z-rated 186mph max
17 in diameter

Actually a little incorrect:

275/40ZR17

275 = mm in width ( FYI 25.4 mm in an inch ) or 10 13/16"
40 = sidewall hieght as a % of tread width, 275*0.40 = 110 mm or 4 5/16" tall
Z = Speed Rating +150 mph
R = Radial
17 = Rim Diameter

thanks again...so i read people putting on 315 tires on an 11inch wheel? hows that work?

Well a 315/35ZR17 tire is actually the exact (very close) same overall diameter to a 275/40ZR17

The math equation is:

(((Tire width in mm /25.4)*percent of sidewall )*2)+wheel diameter = overall height

275/25.4 = 10.82675"
10.82675*0.40 = 4.33"
4.33*2 = 8.66"
8.66+17 = 25.66" OD

315/25.4 = 12.40155"
12.40155*0.35 = 4.34"
4.34*2 = 8.68"
8.68+17 = 25.68" OD
