Default Width versus Weight

I am currently running the 16" speedline "salad shooters" with the stock size245/50/16 tires. Does it make sense to jump up to 275/35/18s given the extra tread width and additional weight for backroad carving and autoXing?

I did a little research on this forum and tirerack. My current wheel and tire combo weighs about 43lbs a piece. The same tire, just 275/35/18, with OEM Z06 wheels weights about 10lbs more a piece at 53lbs, but is a full inch larger in contact patch.

Does the extra inch of tread width trump the additional 40lbs total unsprung weight around an AutoX style course? This is assuming both are appropriately damped for there respective weight.

Your comments are appreciated.

Dont do 18s, do 17s, less weight, better fitment etc.
FYI, the guys who are serious into Autox run 17x11" wheels front and rear with 315/35 tires.
