Default Help with tire sizes

I need new tires for my Trans am pretty soon here. I only have stock rims and want some big tires for a more aggressive look, so I figured I might as well just buy some rims while I'm at it. I want some 17's and am looking for a budget rim/tire combo. I'm looking on OE wheels and see a lot of 17x9.5's and I see that 9.5 can fit 285's maximum. I was leaning more towards 295 - 315 for rears due to the massive size of them. I'm just wondering how big the 285's actually are? I've never actually really looked at any in person and if some of you guys have some and have pics I'd like to see 'em. Like I said I want bigger tires, but if 285's are actually pretty damn big I might just go ahead with those.

10mm wider than a 275. If you could stand 10ft away and physically see the difference I'd be impressed. I wouldn't put a 315 on a 9.5" wheel... If you want a big tire on the rear look to 10"+ or wider for the rear.

Also to consider, just as an example, tirerack has 7 results for 285/40/17 tires. 36 for 275/40/17 tires. You will have a much wider selection of the later sized tires, just my opinion.

Nice, I made it into a sig. lol

285/40-17 is as big as I would go on stock tires. They won't add much and you don't have a great selection, but they would help a little by providing more contact path all around the car.

Okay thanks guys. My original plan was to get some 10.5"s but I basically found some 9.5"s that I liked a lot, but was a little disappointed when I saw you can only fit a 285 on them. However I believe I'll go with the 285s and be satisfied.

I'd stick with 275/40/17s... I personally don't think its worth the cost and limitations to run a 285...

275/40/17- Section Width 10.83"\ Not much wider; .39"
285/40/17- Section Width 11.22"/

275/40/17- OD 25.66"\ Not much taller; .32"
285/40/17- OD 25.98"/

275/40/17- Sidewall 4.33"\ Sidewall is almost the same; .13"
285/40/17- Sidewall 4.49"/

I could understand doing a staggered set up with 17x9.5/17x11s and running a 315/35/17 out back which is considerably wider.

275/40/17- Section Width 10.83"
315/35/17- Section Width 12.40"

275/40/17- OD 25.66"
315/35/17- OD 25.68"

275/40/17- Sidewall 4.33"
315/40/17- Sidewall 4.34"

If you really wanted to stand out with your car you can fit 335/35/17 on a 17x11 with some modification to the fenders, spacers, longer wheel studs.

335/35/17- Section Width 13.19"
335/35/17- OD 26.23"
335/35/17- Sidewall 4.62"

I DO NOT RECOMMEND 315/35/17 ON A 9.5" WIDE WHEEL
