repaired hoosier front runner unsafe?

repaired hoosier front runner unsafe? Picked up a small roofing nail in my hoosier front runner.
Had a hard tie finding someone to plug to pull it out and plug it for me.
They said race tire's are not to be patched or plugged if you get a puncture, as they will come apart at the track.
A local tire guy finally put a plug in it for me, but he told me as well not to chance it.
Is this for real?
Are the tires really THAT delicate?

Thats basically a single ply tire hand laid in a mold, road race tires are the same way, they will toss a cord if you plug them alone, to repair one you need a vulcanised plug and internal patch. And the skills to do it right.
