Question on replacement tires

Hi all. I decided it was time to replace my tires on my WS6 so I ordered a set of 275/40R17's which are the same as what is currently on C6 replica rims that the previous owner put on the car. The tires are now in and I have to take my wheels over to the shop. My issue is is that when I took the wheels off I noticed that the rims are 17x8.5" I know that the recommended rim size is 9-11" for this size tire. My question is, considering I've not had issues with what the PO had on the car in the 5 years since I've had it I can only assume I'll be ok with the same size tire on the rims again? I'd prefer not to get new rims if I don't have to, and the current tires don't appear to bulge much.
Thoughts?

I've put 275's on my 17x8.5 wheels before on one of my previous vehicles, a MkIII 1JZ Supra, and I did not have issues with it at all. The sidewalls bulged slightly, but that is tire dependent. Some tires run wider than others, some less so. You've said you had no issues thus far with that same tire size on 17x8.5 wheels, as long as your replacement tires don't run crazy wide, like some TOYOs and Dunlops do, then I'm sure you'll have no issues. I even know of some dudes that run a 275 on their 17x8 wheels, because they like the fatter, bulging sidewall.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, didn't the early SLP Firehawks come with 275 on like a 17x8 SLP wheel?
