Need help with tire size

If you want a "square" setup (all four tires being the same size) without any issues, and that fits the wheel nicely, then you'll need to stick with a 275/40/17 size.
A 285/40/17 will fit on the rear with no issues (and will fit the wheel just fine), but it may scrub the wheel well liner and/or the inner lip of the bumper cover (where it curves into the liner) up front. Some folks have made this work with a 17x9/+50mm offset wheel, but I wouldn't suggest it with a 17x9.5/+54mm offset.
So basically, either a 275/40 all-around, or a 275 front/285 rear combo will work best.

Just some additional information; 17x9.5" was also the stock rear size for late (base) C4 Corvettes, and was fitted with a 285/40 tire. It was also the stock front and rear size for late Z51 C4 with a 275/40 all-around. So this wheel size was issued from the factory with at least three different tire sizes. But 275/40 is going to be the best choice for a 4th gen F-body as this was the stock size for WS6/SS/Firehawk.
