Default tire pressure?

After checking my tire pressure from the last oil change i got by my mechanic to picking my car up from the dealership for service, i noticed that my mechanic inflated my tires to 34-36 lbs of pressure and the dealership did 30 lbs. The tires are BFG KDWS 245 R16's on a 2001 Trans Am. What pressure is correct?

Measured cold or hot? Either way the 34-36 sounds a little high. I would guess you want no more t han 35 lbs hot which is low 30's cold.

On a side note: I had a dealer inflate my nittoes to almost 40 psi (hot) and I didn't bother to check because it was in for body work, and I lost a LOT of tread in the middle before I figured it out

On the door of my Z, it gives the stock tire size to be P245-50R16 with a recommeded inflation of 35psi front and rear....I use a digital gauge with all of my cars to try keep decent mileage. Even a couple pounds ruins treadwear and mileage. I've always had luck with good wear at the recommended pressure. Traction off the line is a totally diferrent ballgame.........

I run quite a bit less than that in my nitto DR's on the street, never had a problem, even in the rain on a M6 with no TCS

I'd say the smaller rim'd tires can get away with less air, due to the sidewall. I would not dare run the same PSI on an 18 inch rim with small sidewall as I do with what I have on these 16 inchers

My thread seems to be wearing out just fine on mine, there are not any bald spots on one part of the tire and lots of thread on the other. Although they are DR's and are a little harder to see the "thread" on them, they are wearing just fine, and I don't run much preasure in them, even at higher speeds in the rain. In fact it seems to drive better now with the lower preasure DRs in the rain than the Kuhmos that used to be on the back, with the ~35 or whatever PSI in them. Go figure

I run mine at 30 psi but I notice they handle alot better at 28psi- even better at 26psi. I don't know if 28- 26psi is safe though?

Generaly the dealership will use a lower tire pressure, because it gives the feel of a softer more comfortable ride. when i worked a Exxon a couple years back i would ruteinly see caddys and some new chevy vehicles come in with only 28psi straight off the lot.

The door sticker says 30 psi for the 275-40-17 for the SS. Book says go by the door rating unless you're going to be doing high speeds for an extended period. I think for speeds over 100 mph it said run 38 psi or the maxium pressure recommend on the tire (whichever is lower).

Anyway, I've always found running 32-33 psi up front and 30 psi in the back give best tire wear.
