Default Best 17" tires !

Hi, I'm about to pick up a 98 T/A, that has bald Kumho 712s in the back.

I want to pick up the best possible tires for the back. I am looking at acheiving maximum traction at the strip, but also be able to daily drive the car (and that includes driving through rainstorms).

I've heard very good things about the Nitto 555's. I also know they come in Nitto 555 and Nitto 555R (Type R's lol)... what's the difference? Are those the best tires for me, or should I look into something else?

Thanks.

ya i would definately go with the nittos.. put 555s up front and 555rs in the back, the 555rs are good for daily driving, not too bad in the rain and dont wear as fast as other drag radials. They hook awesome when you heat them up a little.

The Nitto 555 is a regular street tire, with lots of tread that lasts fairly long, and doesn't hook too well when launching. The 555r is a drag radial, with a fairly sticky compound that allows for good launching. It also has only 6/32" tread, which means it will last between 10-15k miles depending on your driving habits. I've heard conflicting things, but MOST say that the 555r is fine for the rain as long as you slow it down.
A good tire to consider (depending on how much you want to spend) is the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3. Its pretty much as good as you can get with the best of both worlds. It supposedly has dry traction almost comparable to the Nitto 555r's and wet traction that is far superior. It also has a lot more tread so it will last longer.
Like I said, it really depends on exactly what you want and how much you want to spend.

Thanks guys!

Are those F1's the tires used on the 01-04 Z06 ?

And is it fine to keep the Kumho 712's in the front and only replace the rears?

yeah i would say it would be fine to have the kuhmos up front with drag radials in the back... I had nittos 555s up front with F1s in the back for a while before i got my 555rs and it wasnt all that noticable.. it drove just fine too
