315 real world widths

Wow! Those GS D3s are monsters!
Funny thing is, on Goodyear's website they call them Eagle F1 and list their section width at 12.4. Only .1" off Tire Rack's measurement, but nowhere near 13.1. Check them out, they look like GS D3s don't they??
http://www.goodyeartires.com/goodyea...7&sidewall=VSB
Seems like you can't trust any of the tire vendors or tire mfgs to tell you how big their tires really are. At least Nitto is honest and puts theirs at 12.1. Same measurement I got.
OK, forget Tire Rack, let's do our own chart. So far we know for certain that on an 11" rim the section width(widest part of the tire) for Nittos is 12.1 and Goodyear GS D3s are 13.1.
Anybody else got time to pull one of their 315s off and measure it up??

Yes, I took the bumpstops out, uh....I mean I hacked things up
It was too much of a hassle to keep them in there, they were useless anyhow since the tire is so much closer to the inner fender well. In the even of the car bottoming out, the bumpstop wouldn't have engaged the axle in time anyhow to prevent any damage. Leaving them on there also made it a pain in the *** to lift the car on a conventional lift since the wheels hung up on the bumpstop. My car also has a crossmember mounted torque are which hangs pretty low and which makes it difficult to drive the car on a drive on lift....so given the choice, hacking off the bumpstop was the way to go.

Thanks guys, good info.
Before I make a decision, anybody got a good pic of the BFG KDs from the back and/or a real measurement of the section width on an 11" rim?
WHich is wider, BFG KD or Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3?? If Tire Rack is .8" off on the section width of the GSD3, they are probably way off on the KD.
Also how bad is the KD in the rain really? I've heard everything from tolerable, to "it's like driving on ice". It looks like it has a pretty good tread pattern for evacuating the water. To me it looks better than the Nitto and people say Nittos are OK in the rain. Here's what Goodrich says:
" The g-Force T/A KD is designed to deliver BFGoodrich's Traction/Advantage in order to increase the performance capabilities of sports cars, sports coupes and performance sedans by providing extreme dry road performance (hence the "D" in KD) while providing satisfactory wet traction. The g-Force T/A KD is not intended to be driven in snow".
I then called the Goodrich tech line, 800-521-9796 and they said under no circumstances should they be driven in the rain.
If I can get a definite section width measurement on the BFG KD, I promise I'll quit bugging everyone.
Whatever I decide to go with, I'll post my measurements once they're mounted up.
Thanks!

the kds are excellent in the rain--the people who are telling u they suck are prob refering to the bfg drag radials. which do suck in the rain-BIG TIME. and the kd's look huge on the 11's. mu budyhad them on his car b4 he rolled it and i thought they almost looked too big.

Not sure what you are looking for, but I ended up settling on BFG GForce KD 315s.
Mounted on a TTII 11" rim I get a sidewall to sidewall width of 12 3/4".
No rubbing problems at all on my stock height '02 Camaro Convert(of course I don't take off ramps at 90 like some of you guys). They stick out a little, depends on the angle you look at the car from. Side looks good, front looks OK, back looks like a high school ride.
I could see there might be rubbing issues if it were lowered. It does look kinda silly with those huge tire gaps, but I've already managed to bottom out the exhaust at stock ride height, so I think I will live with it.

That list and the tire rack guy is full of crap. Those gsd3's are way bigger than listed, and my sumitumo's are WAYYYY smaller than listed. I measured my sumitumo 315's and the contact path of the tread is .5" smaller than my 275 khumo's It was 9.5"-10" I can't remember. My next tire will probably be the gsd3's, I just don't want to spend that kind of cash for tires, I'm wanting some pictures of the bfg kd's and if they have a rim gaurd.

The Nitto 555R and 555RII are some of the best wet weather tires around. The soft compound gives them increadible grip in the wet. The only problem is that once the tread wears down, puddles become a hazard as there is no where for the water to go. On just wet ground even bald, they grab big time.
I have no clue as to why the Tire Rack would say the 315 GSD3 was a narrow tire. Maybe they meant a different F1 or a different size. When I took off my 555 315's and put on the GSD3's they measured a full inch wider. It's been said over and over on these forums that the GSD3 315 runs wide for it size. They really are steamrollers.

My KD 315/35/17's are awesome. They hook up relativeley good on the street and they kind of suck in the rain. You just have to take it easy in the rain, as you normally would and you should be fine. I still drive 80 on the highway even if it is drizzling, but not if it is a heavy downpour.
The tires when mounted on the rim look awesome.

Want to know what makes even less sense than all of this?
315 mm = 12.4 inches
So a 315 tire should be on a 12.5" rim?
And a 255 tire should be on a 10" rim?
If you went by exactly how many millimeters are in an inch, then every single suggested tire size in the sticky at the top of this forum is wrong. It all makes no sense to me.

Section width has nothing to do with suggested rim width. All tires are made to bulge out a little in the middle.
Section width is just the max width at the bulges.
A better rule of thumb is to match the rim width to the tread width. Even then, you can go a bit wider or narrower depending on the sidewall height, but too much in either direction will either bulge or stretch the tire and it won't look good or right.
