Size question

Size question I just bought my car a month or so ago, and here's what's on it:
Z06 Chrome wheels 18x9.5 front, 18x10.5 rear
Nitto 555 Extreme Tires 275/40-18 front, 285/35-18 rear
I was looking on Tire Rack at rears since I can't keep my foot out of the gas
, and it dawned on me that my front tires are taller than my rears. I even did the little conversion thingy they have to find the dia of the tires and that's what it said. The fronts are like .8 of an inch taller. Now here's my question: can someone tell me why he would have done this? Is there some sort of handeling gain my having the fronts taller? I've never heard of anything like that before, but then again, I don't know too much about anything on these newer cars! Or did I just figure it wrong??? Someone please give me a clue here!!!

Someone not knowing much about tires would do that, or availability/cost of the front tire.
Front tires should be 275/35ZR17, will be a little shorter that the rear but not enough to worry
I run 275/35ZR18 front and 295/35ZR18 rear, on my SS.
