Default Problem with M/T ET street radials

I recently put a new set of ET street radials (255/50/16) on a extra set of 16x8 wheels for track use. The car feels like a f***ing drunk on crack, with the back end dancing and skittering all over the place. Tire pressure was equal @ 40 psi, doesn't matter if it's under acceleration or just cruising, starts at around 45-50 mph and gets worse as speed increases. MT tech line told me that minimum wheel width should be 8.5, better to have 9-10" wheel, that would resolve the problem. Are any of you guys running into the same problem, and does anybody have experience running them on a wider wheel? Thanks for the help.

Your problem is with running a **** load of pressure. Drop it down to around 25psi, and you'll be fine.

Yeah, I would imagine that your problem is the air pressure. That's a lot of air sitting in there. Drop it to the above pressure and try it out.

Yeah, lower the pressure, MT recommends 16+ psi. I ran 25 psi a few times, and felt like what you're describing, only at higher mph. Then I finally lowered it to 18-19psi, and it actually felt a lot more stable. Mine are also on 16x8 wheels.

Edit: I noticed you said radials, I have ET Streets, but I still think lowering the pressure will help you. 40psi is a lot.

Thanks guys problem solved/lesson learned. She likes 25 lbs, ran it up to 125 (I don't think I'll ever trap anywhere near that speed) and felt really stable.

How wide are the 255/50's sidewall to sidewall when mounted on an 8" rim ??

I have 245/50x16 Nittos on my car, and the sidewalls do foul a bit on my car. Going to 255's would open up tyre choice a good bit, for some much stickier rubber..

At 25 lbs, only got rubber in the wheel well and undside lip of 1/4 panel. At 18 lbs I'm getting stuff on the outside of the 1/4. FWIW.

I put mine on the other week and had them at 32 for street driving. They are on 16x8 wheels. They are unstable as hell when cornering fast or making lane changes. Even deep ruts in the road make the car wander. Damn good thing they hook like hell at the track! I bumped them up to 36 on the way home from the track last weekend and they felt better. I run them at 20 on the track. The low PSI MT recommends is for track use, not street driving.

32psi will wear the center out. I have to run 22-24 in mine to keep the center from wearing
