a 10" wide rim with a 5" backspacing has a 0mm offset.
a 10" rim with a 7" backspacing would be a 50.8mm offset
a 10" rim with a 3" backspacing would have a offset of -50.8mm
1" is roughly 25.4mm

Not exactly. BS and offset are related, but you have to include the bead/rim edge thickness, which on every wheel is different. But for quick guesstimating, I use 1/2"
So, a 38 mm offset 9" wide wheel would be:
Offset (converted to inches) + 50% of rim width + 1/2" =
(38 / 25.4) + (.5 * 9) + .5 = 6.5"
So a quick guess is 6.5" backspace.
