Only run the max tire pressure as stated on the sidewall. The last thing you need is a steering tire to fling apart @ over 100 mph.

Ive also done 40 alot. I agree 50 is def. pushing the limits of safety, and no real return on your timeslip.

I've always run 50 psi in my front Nitto R2s (sticky road race 275/40 17s) at the track with NO problems. I figured more pressure=lower rolling resistance=at least a couple hundreths quicker (hopefully), especially on a minor bolt on car that needs all the help it can get!
If you feel unsafe/unsure about that, running 44-45# should NOT be a problem for the short time you'll be at that pressure, on a clean, smooth surface, given (as others have said) your sidewall states that the tire can be inflated to that pressure.

It's not worth the risk. You can't possibly gain anything in ET or MPH from the max the sidewall states to 50 lbs. 38 cold is plenty, they're gonna pop up to 40 anyway.
