de-chroming wheels

Default de-chroming wheels

so i bought a set of chrome aluminum wheels and they were not taken very good care off, so im wanting to strip the chrome and paint them black with a polished lip. the chrome is starting to pit and peel and doesnt look very good up close. anyone know of anyway to dechrome them with out having to spend alot and have the dipped.

You could buy one of those little blasting cabinets for $100 at Harbor Freight and sand/media blast them yourself.

i though about having them blasted but im afraid that the grain they will have to use to remove the chrome will damage or make the aluminum to rough, has anyone heard of torching chrome to get it off ive tried it on plastic and it works but its alot of work

Sand blast would be the best bet with fine sand then to glass beeds to make a really nice finish. Wow, this is giving me ideas!!!

Just get the finest stuff you can to blast them with. Sand is more abrasive, walnut hulls work good and are soft enough to not remove any material if you leave it in one spot too long.
