Arrow BFG KDW's Questions

first i think im posting this in the right section but if not mods please move...

anyways i just bought some 2002 ws6 rims w/ 275 KDW's on them. two have 1/2 tread life and the other two like barley anything left but still usable for a month or two. my question is since this will be my DD should i put the ones with more tread on the front or back. ill try to stay out of rain but if i get caught then thats why im asking. i think i should put the set with more tread on the back but the guy that sold them to me said he would put them on the front.

also someone said KDW's have hydroplaning issues so if anyone knows about this help me out with some better info on whether or not i should even drive in the rain with these tires. my plan is too start driving the t/a in april and buy nitto NT555's, the street ones, and put them on the back when i have enough cash. im just wondering if their is a better tire for the price out their then the nitto's in your guys opinions.

thanks alot
steve

I've always put the better treaded tires inthe front for better braking and control. As far as the KDW being bad in the rain I think you have them confused with the KD's. I'm pretty sure the kdW stands for "wet." Just like the kdwS is the all season and is dry, wet, snow.

the better always goes toward the rear..in any extreme braking situation the weight transferred to the front will help a balder tire grip the road due to the force...with the weight transfer if the rear tires arent moving any water then you have a hydroplane sitaution and the rear end comes around on you..research it..its has been proven time and time again

Ok, let's see where to start, ok first off I don't drive my cars on "barely anything left" tires because life is to short as it is and no need to risk making it shorter or risking someone elses, so that addresses that part.
Next it all depends on if these are the new style KDW's or old style, but considering how you wrote it I am going to assume they are the old style and tell you that IMO they are dangerous in the rain. I hydroplaned my '05 GTO at 40MPH and totalled it, so enough said about that. I have an '06 GTO now with the new style KDW's and they are great wet or dry. I am on my second set of 275 rear's which the first set lasted 30000 miles (yep some racing shortened their life) and the fronts (245's) have about 5K left on them.

New style KDWs are not available in 275/40ZR17 . . . FYI

Any tire will hydroplane . . . now granted the tread pattern will also increase or descrease the likely hood . . . .

Well I burnt the crap out of my rear tires and everyone told me to put the good ones int the back, I figured I would just burn them off too. I also thought it would be a better Idea to steer and not hydroplane as bad, so I kept the good ones in the front. Most of the braking on a RWD car is in the front anyways.

I would also say to put the new ones on the back because these cars will swap ends in a hurry. I have ran the KDW in the rain, even on a wet road coarse, and thought they did great. I now have the Eagle GSD3 and will be going back to the KDW when the time comes.

And i really dont care what you say either..not to be rude...its a proven fact that the better tire goes on the rear..especially on a rear wheel drive where the back end is more likely to come around..there have been plenty of tests to confirm that it is safer

First off I don't think I said mine were 275/40ZR/17, just that they were 275's.
Next I think someone had better tell BFG that they don't make the tire they are showing as available on their website:
http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/specs...-a-kdw/22.html
Specs cut and pasted:
275/40ZR17 98Y BSW 42899 9 - 11 10.9 on 9.5 25.7 10 810 1653@44 TT, DIR
AND

275/40ZR18 99Y BSW 41503 9 - 11 10.9 on 9.5 26.7 10 779 1709@44 TT, DIR

In your defense I think these are both fairly new releases since a 40 aspect was not available last year in a 18 when I bought my new rear 275/35ZR/18ones to replace the ones I wore out.
The sad thing is that no one makes anything larger than a 35 aspect ratio in a 17 inch when you get up above the 300 mark. I know because I have 315/35/17 Goodyear F-1's on my '56 and I would love to up size to a 45 or 50 aspect ratio but they stop at 285's in the 17's. Unless someone would like to prove me wrong (I'm hoping!)
