Default Ruff Racing 278 Questions...

I'm looking to buy some chrome Ruff 278's soon and i had some questions. I've searched all day and there just isn't a lot of info on these wheels. So let's set the record straight once and for all about these...

People keep going back and forth saying they're a straight bolt on and others say you need the hubcentric rings? What's the verdict here? My car is going to be pulling street/strip duty and i don't want to worry about the wheels at the track (street tires, no DR's or anything right now).

what offsets are you guys running front and rear? I'm wanting to go 18 x 8.5 for the fronts and 18 x 9.5 for the rears, but I don't know much about the offsets. I don't want to order these and then find out I got the wrong offset and have problems with them.

If you know a good place to buy them, shoot me a pm with a link. I found a couple places, but haven't called for definite pricing yet. Looks like they run about $800 a set for chrome...that sound about right?

Thanks for the info and maybe this thread will save someone else the headache of searching all day like I did (and I only found 1 car that had them in chrome)

The wheels will bolt up fine even though the bolt pattern is not exact. I would go with the hub rings.

I would run a wheel with the exact bolt pattern if I went to the strip instead of these just to be safe.

Our sponsor Tomz wheels is selling ruff wheels and can help you out with all the offset info.

I've got like 3 sets of stock wheels here for drag radials, so that's really not an issue for the track lol. I just wanted it to be known that these ARE NOT for a "stock" car...on street tires I don't guess it matters on the street anyway. I had read that if you don't go with the rings, then after a few hard launches they'll shift on the hub. Not many people have these wheels so I'm trying to sort through what's the truth.

How much are the hub rings? I'm sure one of the sponsors carry them...

I checked tomzwheel's website and never saw the Ruff wheels listed. Maybe I just missed them. I'll shoot them a pm and see what's up.

Someone want to help me out with the offsets?

The sponsor will send the hub rings with the wheels if you ask for them. They are cheap and they should throw them in for free. The Ruff 278's in an 18x8.5 only come with a 35mm offset. For the rears the 18x9.5 with a 45mm offset are perfect.
Here are mine

Do ANY of the sponsors still carry these? I'd rather support someone on here if I can, but I already found one place that has them and they aren't a sponsor.

I have money in hand to buy these, but I want to deal with a company that some people on here have dealt with before and had good experiences with.

Tomzwheels can't get the 278's anymore. they were discontinued through their distributor. They can, however, get the 930's if anyone is interested in those. I made the call earlier this afternoon and got a price and found out what I needed to know. I'm calling tomorrow to order them and finalize things. Can't wait. Thanks for the help everyone.

How much are the 930s going to run? I've been wanting something different for a while. Do you know if they'll fit a 315..

Sent you a pm.

Looks like lots of people have the 278's in hyper black. I searched and found a few pics of a vette with them in chrome. Any black T/As with these in chrome?

Well, I'm keeping this info with my original post so people can find it if they need it. I PM'ed a few people concerning the tire sizes for the 278's. I ended up buying:

18 x 8.5 front +35 offset
18 x 9.5 rear +45 offset

I was thinking:

255/40 front
275/35 rear

Yes, I read the sticky on the tire sizes, but the offsets were different for the sizes I bought. Not even sure if that really matters. I hate trying to figure out tire sizes, so maybe someone can come in and help me out.

I'm not trying to stuff a huge tire under the car front or rear

I only want correct sizes so I can get these put on. The car will be lowered after these go on, so keep that in mind. I was told a 295/40 would scrub on a lowered car in the rear, but I'm not sure.

Edit: doesn't look like the 295 is listed in the sticky as recommended tire size range for the 9.5 rear anyway.

Tomzwheels sent me a pm regarding those tire sizes I listed. Looks like that's what I'm gonna be running...

and yes, those wheels look MUCH better in person. I hadn't seen a set until I bought mine. I'm happy with them and they aren't even on the car The lips look bigger in person than they do in the pics IMO.

I'm continuing to search for pics, but if I run these two sizes, will it looks odd? Is there a better size I could run for the front to match with no rubbing issues or anything?

After looking over Discount tire's calculator, it looks like a 255/35 might be better for the front as far as looks. The 255/40 was actually a taller tire than I would have had in the rear.

yeah if you go with a 275/35 in the rear, then you'll want a 255/35 for the front. I went with the 255/40 because I had the 295/35 in the rear. Basically try to match the overall heights front to rear.

^^^ pic didn't work. I ran across some pics of your car though. Very nice.

I just didn't think those sizes would work on these widths. Obviously they do, but I'm just wanting an average tire for these.

I'm probably going with 255/35 and 275/35 unless I find a size in the next week or so that would be better.

Needless to say I've spent a lot of time messing with the tire calculators lol. If the 275 front and 295 rears are safe to run, I wouldn't have a problem with them. I'm trying to stick with a budget tire with normal sizes. The sticky in this section doesn't even list a 275 for an 8.5 or a 295 for a 9.5.
