Default A little scared

Ok, a lotta scared. I have one of my instructor's cars in my possession and am fixing a lot of general stuff, but I spotted something amiss and wanted to fix it. The flasher for the turn signals is broken.

The problem is that I have to take off the steering wheel, which includes the airbag. I have a bit of a fear of the airbag deploying while I am working on the wheel and taking stuff apart.

How can I minimize my risk of a false deployment?

What kind of car? Because you sure don't have to remove the wheel on an f-body to replace the turn signal flasher (actually...not on any car I've ever seen).

After disconnecting the battery and/or the air bag harness plug at the base of the steering column, wait at least 5 minutes before removing the air bag. There is a capacitor in the circuit that keeps it powered for a few minutes after it is disconnected.

The turn signal flasher is clipped to the back side of the dash panel just to the right of the opening when you take off the knee panel under the steering column.
