Wiring help.. I thought there was a wiring harness you could buy to plug straight from the car to the new head unit, as opposed to connecting each wire separately. 
If that's not the case, what's the proper to go about connecting each wire to the car's wiring harness.

Don't splice into your factory wiring harness. You can buy a wiring harness adapter from any audio shop, most auto parts stores, and even Wal-Mart. You want the 21-pin harness for 1988 and up GM models. It will have industry standard wire colors that you just match to the same color wires on your new head unit, then you just plug it into the factory harness.

There is no 18-pin connector at the radio. There are two 10-pin connectors (one black and one white) that lock together to fit into one socket. This is what the 21-pin adapter harness plugs into - one pin position is left unused. On a Monsoon system there is also a 9-pin connector for the external CD changer (it's there whether you have a changer or not). This harness will be left unused with an aftermarket head unit.
