The security light stays on steady when the BCM detects the wrong ignition key (resistance value of the key pellet doesn't match the programming). The light flashes when the BCM can't read the key at all because the pellet is missing or damaged.
If the security light is on then you are on borrowed time! The car won't crank or turnover if it can't read the key. This happened a month after I bought my car.
I had the dealer replace the VATS system under warranty.
There are two other avenues you can try as well. The first one is to take an eraser from the back of a pencil and clean the terminal on the key. Or there is a guy on EBAY that sells uncut keys with the right resistance. You just need to use a voltometer to check the resistance and get the key cut at the dealer. I think he was selling the keys for $8
