Default Looking at this double-din...

  • Indash
  • Good/reliable navigation system
  • "Flat" appearance (IE: No ***** present)

I've found the JVC KW-NX7000 (picture), but want to know what you guys think about it. Is it a good unit?
Would you run it in your car? If not, what would you substitute it with (while still meeting the above specifications)?

TIA

I have had good experiences with that unit. There is also the new JVC KW-NT1 that is now available also, looks alot like the Pioneer and Kenwood models. One cool feature these both have is a removeable faceplate for extra security. They also use a proximity sensor technology that is pretty cool. The NX7000 also has bluetooth built in which doesn't require the seperate module. Both are nice units and hold there own against the Kenwood and Pioneer units.

Don't forget the Kenwood DNX 7120/7140 or 8120/8140. Or the discontinued but still available Pioneer Avic-Z3. They are the only "****-less" double DIN nav units I know of that can change illumination color to match the red Firebird dash.

that's awesome info. Thanks for the recommendations! I'm going to look into them a little more closely

Anyone:
Between the DNX7120 & the KW-NX7000, which would you go with and why? (Both cost the same, for the record).

Personally, I would go with th Kenwood although the JVC looks like a strong contender. My reasons might be things you don't find as important but I like having Garmin-based navigation (because it makes it compatible with my other Garmin devices and software), Bluetooth without requiring an external adapter, and the ability to change the illumination color to match the dash.

I think the JVC has some interesting features such as speed compensated volume, GPS speed alerts, 3D lane selection views, and an SD slot. But you should check into the availability and frequency of map updates - a GPS is only as good as the maps it uses.

I posted a comparison of the Kenwood DNX-5120 and Pioneer Avic-D3 in this thread. It's a lower model but it might give you some idea of what the Kenwood is like.

I would go with the kenwood for two reasons:

1) The garmin based navigation is very very very user friendly.

2) The jvc has a fatter face that sticks out very far, you can mount it back farther but most of the time this results in a face opening problem.

i have put the jvc in an 08 f350, 04 excursion, 04 silverado, and 05 corvette all this week. Its a nice unit just not feeling the thickness of the face. I put the kenwood in an 06 g6 and an 05 titan, and the closer to flush fit is just nicer.

I vote for the Kenwood since it has Garmin GPS.

I got the JVC NX5000 which is a single DIN unit and I love it. The GPS has been very accurate, screen plenty large enough, sleek look. Technically they are discontinued, but there are still new models floating around. Better price than Double Dins too without moding the dash or DIN area.

I like the detachable face of the double din JVCs so I will probably go that way.
I would probably go with a kenwood if they had some kind of anti theft.

So how do you guys keep your double dins from getting stolen?

Wow, old thread.
I ended up getting the DNX7120. I love it. BUT, I don't think you can change the illumination color to match the dash--at least the guy at the Kenwood Repair Center & I couldn't figure it out. WhiteBird, care to share? It's one of the larger reasons I went with this particular unit...

On my DNX5120 you go to Setup->System Setup->(select page 2)->Panel Color Coordinate. I don't know specifically about the 7120 but according to Kenwood, the more current 7140 and 7160 both have "variable panel illumination" as does the entire 51x0 and 61x0 series. I can't imagine why Kenwood would leave out that feature on just one model of the DNX series.

Also, the Kenwoods have a security code system that is similar to TheftLock on a Monsoon. You can set up your own personal unlock code and a small red LED on the face of the head unit will blink whenever the system is off. The unit can't be restarted after losing power (battery disconnected, etc.) unless the correct unlock code is entered.

Just went out to the car to try it & didn't see those options.

Setup --> System Setup (pg2) --> then

Page 1 Options:
.Beep
.Scroll
.Remote Sensor
.CD Read
Page 2 Options:
.Nav Key Longer than 1 second (R.Cam or V.Off)

I have seen several online reviews of the 7120 that mention the variable color illumination but I couldn't find any information about it on Kenwood's website. You may want to call their technical support for definitive information.

I suppose that's all I can do now. Thanks for trying though, WhiteBird.
