ok, getting closer here. 2000 trans am. I had a thread earlier mentioning that I had a sail speaker out and was thinking about upgrading, but keeping my hu stock, it was recommended to me to go with cdt's for doors and audiopipe for sails...i've tried to contact Kee Audio three times and have not had any luck as of yet. As I was looking at Kees website I had seen the enclosure that Kees sells for a 10" in the hatch, went out to my car and then saw the opening for an enclosure (never looked before, just put my tops in and went) anyways, now I'm thinking about a 10" in the rear, still keeping my stock HU. Now having said that, I had a local shop tell me they can install 4 polks, doors and sails, along with a alpine amp for about $600.00......here's my dilama...either I change out the sails only, or go ***** deep and go with a new amp, change out the doors, sails, and throw in a 10 for good measure....i'd like to get out of it for around $700-$800.00 if possible..any suggestions.......

 

stick with all alpine. i would do the following:
alpine type s 6.5's 69/pair
alpine type s 10inch sub 69, or typr r sub 115
alpine 4 channel mrpf300 159
alpine monoblock mrpm500 169
so either 535 or 581 depending on sub choice
then u would need a 10 inch strealth box from either kee or subthump
4 gauge dual amp kit
line level converters if you are keeping factory hu. (3)
you could mount your amps to the back wall and still have no problem storing your tops

5 channel amp = 4 channel stereo + 1 channel mono amps.

If your looking at a system overhaul with amp and everything then I really wouldn't go with Alpine. They are ok but really have relied mostly on their past name recognition over the last few years instead of how good their product is (just my opinion). I have full access to Alpine product, I just don't use it very much. Plus you don't want to use a coaxial speaker in a car set up for components. That's a step backward for the doors.
As for powering Type-S Alpine speakers with an aftermarket amp, they will sound ok but you won't be getting the full potential of the amp from a Type-S speaker. You'd have to go Type-R or better to get the full benefit of using an aftermarket amp. Same with the Type-S subwoofer. Alpine's Type-E and Type-S are the entry level stuff from them and is ok but not optimal for the money.

Just a few options/ideas. Obviously things can be switched around and such.

 

Kee, I see what you are saying, but for a budget friendly system, i think what i said sounds great. Of course going with higher compoinents make for a better system, but for under 600 bucks i dont think he could go wrong (under 750 with a new headunit).
I have the same setup, with an alpine 9886 hu, and it sounds great imo. if it matters, i am a car audio installer for the past 7 years.

 

did a nice budget setup in a vette just recently, obvioully a different car but here is my recommendation

5 ch amp
infinity reference 5350a
around 210-220 on ebay if i recall

2 pairs of polk db651 speakers, amazon has em for 50 a pair which is a steal for them. its a great coaxial one of my favorite speakers to use

go with the 10" sub of your choice.

thats 400 dollars plus sub box and wiring, so ur deff doable at ur budget

 

Ugh, not to hate but those are all pretty shitty choices of speakers IMO. The Type-S speakers are horrible to say the least. You have a 2-door car... spend most your money on your front stage and get a solid component set.

 

Just checked ebay on what you were saying about that amp. That's cheaper then what I pay wholesale for that amp on ebay. Both Amazon and Crutchfield charge $349.00 for the same amp so I thought I was charging a decent price at $70.00 cheaper. Guess I was wrong. Oh well.

woohoo, sometimes it's awesome to know people that work for certain companies that can get speakers at cost. getting some infinity kappa 6.5 components and 6.5 coax for cost. so, it's like buying the coax, and getting the components free.

 

Apparently on ebay you don't have to know anyone. As an example that amp listed above on ebay is actually slightly lower then cost. I have Infinity's buyers list because I carry Infinity. That's lower then the buyers list pricing.

 

ok...so what I have done so far...is order before reading all these posts...lol..anyways... I already ordered 2 sets of alpine type "s" speakers $ 135.00 then an m500 alpine amp $ 169.00 then an alpine f300 amp $ 159.00 now an 10" alpine type "R" for $ 115.00. I may order an alpine x305 HU now too. Kee... answer your phone so i can order a box and a rack!! lol...I am worried now that I hear the 6 1/2 "S" series arent great..though Alpine is a good product and bmicolosi has had good luck!!

 

The Alpine Type-S is not bad. To give you an idea of where they are in the Alpine line they are 1 step above the entry level Type-E. With Alpine you have Type-E, S, R, and X. I have used them before and they work fine. In fact just a week ago I put some in the doors of a Civic ran off a Clarion deck and they sound ok. They will do better off an aftermarket amp for sure. I just don't use them very often because their are other options in that price range I prefer over them. Not because I think they are bad or anything.
Keep in mind alot of this is a matter of preference. Alot of what someone else hears you may not and vice versa.

THIS is the biggest thing to keep in mind.

tis why i like silk dome tweeters or other some type of non-metallic tweeter.
mb quart and some of the other high end ones tend to have a very tinny sound to me. silk and non metallic sounds more natural to me.
