Default weird antenna noise

Hey guys, I had a quick question about my antenna. When ever i turn on my radio in my 01 formula, the antenna goes up and just as it reaches the highest point, it seems like the antenna wants to go up maybe another inch or so and your can hear the gears in the antenna motor i guess skip? it goes down all the way without any noise, but once it goes up be prepared to hear a buzz type sound. just when it reaches the highest point, anyone have any ideas? lol it works perfectly besides that stupid sound.. thanks

Is it going all the way up? (Does one of the antenna sections look significantly shorter than one of the others?)

Do you live in a part of the country with a lot of road salt?

You shouldn't need an antenna. Your current one is probably just gummed up. The factory procedure is to take a rag, wet it with pure mineral spirits, rub down the antenna, retract, extend, and repeat. That will probably free it up.

If it doesn't, you can just replace the mast without the rest of the antenna assembly.

BTW - If you have a new antenna coming, why ask the question?

It doesnt look/sound gummed up tho? more like a gear in the motor problem. But the antenna was free and i figured i would ask to see if its a popular problem or not on these.

The gumming up is a common problem. Common here and common enough that GM addresses it in their factory service manuals.

The mast is attached to a long plastic lead with gear teeth on it. As the antenna motor turns, it feeds that plastic lead in/out and retracts/extends the antenna. When the mast gets gummed up, the plastic lead can't go out any more and the clicking you hear is the antenna motor gear teeth skipping over the plastic gear teeth on the lead.
