Trunk button doesn't always work

Does anyone else have this problem? The trunk release button will often require pressing twice to fully open the hatch, or will randomly not work. When the button doesn't work at all i have to turn the car off so i can take the wireless and hit the button on that to open. The remote always works so i'm assuming its the release button in the car. Wires shorting or something?? This has been going on for a while and i am finally annoyed enough to fix it now :bang:

I have the same problem. Annoying, but not enough to check into it yet. Not sure if the BCM gives the go-ahead in order for the switch to work.

does the parking brake need to be set to use the button?
I can't remember, I don't drive mine much anymore.

Odd, the button inside my car won't work at all if it's running nor will the remote. I have to shut the car off to get either of them to work. Kind of a pain in the ass if you need to grab something out of the trunk.

The hatch will unlock when the button with the trunk
symbol is pressed twice within five seconds, as long as
the ignition is turned to OFF. If the ignition is on, the
trunk button will only worikf the transmissioni s in
PARK (P) for an automatic transmission,o r if the
parking brake iss. et on a manual transmission.

Remote Hatch Release (If Equipped)
Press the switch under the
lamp control below the
instrument panel to unlock
the hatch from inside
your vehicle.
I
If you have an automatic transmission, your shiflte ver
must be in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) to use the
switch. If you have a manual transmission and the
ignition switch is in RUN, you must set the parking
brake before you can use thsew itch.
The switch only works when theig nition is in RUN,
ACC or when RAP is present. (See “Retained
Accessory Power” in the Index.)

the cut and paste came up with some misspellings, but you can figure it out.
sometimes the parking brake switch gets stuck and doesn't work right. when you pull the brake lever up you should see BRAKE lit in the gauge panel. if the BRAKE is not lit the car doesn't know the brake is set and the hatch release wont work (on M6 cars).

Another thing to look into is a modification that adds an additional spring to the hatch release mechanism. This helps with the situation where you push the button and hear it work but you still can't get the hatch open (because it hasn't fully released from the latch). I did mine years ago but I can't remember where I found the instructions. I'm sure if you do a search for "hatch release" you'll be able to find it.

Did it a couple months back and works really well now. I don't think my brake light is engaging when I put on the parking brake. I'll have to check that out later then.

as long as its tryin to pop and just doesn't get it compeltely, an extra spring is a great fix.. if its not even trying to pop at all, could be electrical.

Danny2tek May 18, 2010 07:20 PM

I added the second spring years ago, works like a charm

MillerTime85 May 18, 2010 07:30 PM

Thats exactly what I was doing. I installed the extra spring and the hatch opens properly now from the interior buttom.

All 3 of my birds have had this problem. How/Where do you install a spring and, what dimensions should I look for in a spring?

MillerTime85 Jan 14, 2011 04:06 PM

It will take you longer to find it in the store than doing it.Heres a writeup
