Default Hardwire Sirius

I have an older Sirius unit (Sportster) which runs on 10-16V and I want to hard wire it. Is it better to run a direct (but long) wire to the ign on the fuse panel or is okay to just wire it to the radio ign wire (yellow) and ground, and if so, should I use an inline fuse just to be careful? I'm also assuming the "clip on" style wire splicers are okay.

Thanks.

Sirius radios draw very little power so you can splice into the radio harness without worrying about overloading the circuit. An additional fuse is not necessary as long as you use at least the same gauge wire as the factory harness. Fuses don't protect the devices in a circuit - they protect the wire from overheating and possibly causing a fire. As long as you use a short run of the same gauge (or larger) wire as the factory circuit, the radio fuse will protect the wiring.

Scotchlocks (those clip on wire taps) are acceptable for interior wiring although there are much better alternatives. The best option is to cut, splice, solder and cover with heat shrink tubing.

Thanks for the advice. I really don't like wire splicers - I much prefer soldering, so after sleeping on, since I've decided to replace the entire head unit, I'll probably just splice into the new HU harness rather than the car harness, that way I can do it on my bench and the Sirius power wire and HU can be removed quickly in as one "unit".
