Headlights on & stereo lights go out?

Could you explain more? The stereo lights go dim when the headlights go on? If so - assuming you have an aftermarket radio (which?) - then that's a problem with the illumination wire. Either you've got it hooked to the wrong one (there are often two with reversed polarities) or something funky is going on.
during the day I can see the stereo display, it is illuminated......When the headlights are turned on the stereo display is black, can't see a thing........It's a factory stereo but isn't the original. The plug has been hardwired back together.....I assume it had an aftermarket stereo in at one time and someone just tossed this back in to sell....
