Default Help me choose a subwoofer

Hey guys. I was going to run 3 10" MTX's I already had but decided I'd really like to have more room since the TA is going to be my DD and want to go with the stealthboxes. I plan on getting one from DD for the driver side and get a pass side one later when they make them. In other vehicles I've had I had either large sealed boxes or ported boxes; so no experience with small sealed enclosures. I had two Fosgate HX2 DVC 15's sealed I loved and 2 Kicker L7 12's ported that were pretty good. I guess you could say I prefer more SPL over SQ. I really like deep bass and want it to hit hard with rap. Amps I have are a Fosgate 800a2 (200x2 @ 4 ohms, 400x2 @ 2 ohms) and an MTX 81000D (1000 @ 2 ohms, 500 @ 4 ohms). Pretty sure they both put out more than that; birth sheet with the MTX was tested @ 1700 RMS @ 2 ohms 14.5v. Anyway- haven't really heard any of a lot of the newer subs and most that people recommend are for ported boxes. I've been looking at FI, ID, RE, Dayton HO, Sundown SA 10, TC Sounds, and a few others. ARC was also recommended. I've never heard any of these and none of the dealers local to me have them; most are JL/Kicker/Kenwood/Pioneer/Alpine. Please help steer me in the right direction! I'd like to try and keep the sub around $200 or less but you know how that goes... lol

Well I just pulled the trigger on the TC Sounds Epic 10 and stealth box from DD. After talking with Dennis the stealth box is 5" deep then drops down to 8" deep where the terminals are; so the size of the magnet on most of the subs I was looking at wouldn't fit. The TC has a mounting depth of 5.62 inches so with a 3/4 inch spacer it will fit. I was going to go with the Sundown SA 10 but the mounting depth is 6" and the magnet is 7" in diameter. I can't wait to get it in and see how it sounds! I'll let you guys know

my 10w3v3 in high output box was great, but i just broke a tinsel lead. i needed something cheap for now that could handle my jl 500/1 so i picked up an alpine type s (new sws-10d4 500rms model). sounds just as good as the w3 did and a lot cheaper. i got it at cost because of my work, but even normal prices its around $100 less than the w3.

Love my 2012 10" type R's. Mainstream, I know, but perform excellent.. more than I would ever need. I've got them in a dual 10" custom F body box from Kee Audio, a site sponsor. The box has a TON of depth to it and fits the trunk FLUSH. Love it.

how much room per sub does that offer? i was going to email kee but i know hes busy and it might take a week or 2 to get a reply. i would like to go single sub ported, but the only ported ive seen look like they have dinky ports and would probably fall apart with more than 200 watts. because of that im going dual sealed

I'll go outside and measure the depth for you in a bit, and take some pictures of my setup. It's super nice... it almost looks OEM. I've got the Kee Audio box and a custom made carpeted amp rack that sits on the hump of the trunk with a plexi-glass see through window to show off the amps

With the depth of this box, I would take it over a ported box any day. The type R's fit nicely and the bass is not only tight but it definitely seems like it's at it's full potential with this box.

Got the box today. Looks like a pretty well made box . Tried to fit the sub in but it was too big. I filed away at it for a bit until the hole was large enough. I also had to use the trim ring to keep the magnet from bottoming out against the box. Just BARELY made it! Other than that she's in her new home! Only problem is I don't have my car lol. I've been trying to find an AC leak for a few days and gave up today and took it to a shop. Of course they couldn't find it either. Probably evap. Anyway- went to leave and the ignition switch wouldn't turn. Finally got it to but the security light would kick on and kill the engine. Great. So I had to leave it there. I figured it would cost more to have it towed back to the house to do it myself than it would for them to fix it. Can't wait to see how much this will be. Ignition switch was $147 and keys are $22 each so far. First time I've taken a car to a mechanic in several years. Hopefully I'll get her back tomorrow and see how this thing sounds!

Got the sub in yesterday and have been taking it easy but so far I'm quite impressed. Still need to properly set gains since I just did it by ear and set them low at that. Running off a MTX 81000D @ 2 ohms. Sound is good; accurate, and clear (especially compared to L7's ported). Not really fair to compare it to 2 12's in a ported box but it gets pretty loud; probably louder than 99% of people would want to listen to. It does well on the lows but kind of not much output on the very bottom. I've never heard a 10 get low like a 12 or 15 does though; especially in a small sealed box so not really faulting the sub for it. Overall I'm very happy with it. I definately plan on getting another one when the pass side box comes out

I gotta show you my setup.. the 10's I have hit the lows just as hard and crisp as the highs, even with the sealed box. Like I said there is a ton of depth though, I'm extremely happy with my setup for the money, especially the way it looks, show quality!
