The general consensus would be not to spend any time or money substantially improving the rear channels as they are intended to only provide a "fill" effect. Generally speaking, you want your main channels in the front, and the (supporting) rear channels to provide a little bit of a dispersing effect to make the front right and front left appear to blend seamlessly across the soundstage.
Now I used the word "generally" because lots of people put big-*** full-range cones in their sail panels instead of mid-bass subs, with lots of power and are happy with it. If that's the direction you want to take, go for it. If you want a basic fill effect, some 4" 2-ways or components will be fine.
