Default 2003 Airbag SDM need programming?

Does a 2003 airbag module need programming? I've read conflicting reports. My Silverado has a B1000 with the service airbag light and display on. The SDM is more corroded then some of my 15 year old batteries.

I'd love to get one out of a boneyard or off ebay instead of paying the $417 the dealer is trying to charge. wanted to know if it's plug and play, or if I need to get it programmed.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
jim

Has anyone dealt with this? I'd much rather spend $500 towards my 68 cutlass suspension instead of my truck which is pretty much a beater at this point

According to the GM service manual, there is no programming required. The Sensing and Diagnostic Module replacement instructions cover disabling the airbag system, removing the original module, installing the new module and re-enabling the airbag system. There are all kinds of warnings about making sure the module points in the correct direction, ensuring it does not get dropped or banged, and not allowing any moisture to get in it but there is nothing about programming.

I'd be very careful about getting one from a junk yard since you have no idea if it has been damaged or gotten wet which could cause it to deploy the airbags as soon as power is applied.

thanks Whitebird,
I was actually thinking the same thing. There's no way to determine whether a module is good or not, is there?

Has anyone tried out myairbags or airbagsystems?

You might consider picking up a refurbished one off Amazon or something similar. I bought a refurbed ABS module off Amazon for 1/4 the price of a new one from the dealer, due to the dreaded ABS issue that many Silverados run into. Rock Auto might offer them as well.
