Default Need input/opinion, out of the stereo game for a while

Hi all, I have a 2000 SS and I want to install a double din radio in it with a back up camera. I would like to have the backup camera on a switch AND wired into the backup lights for signal. I want it on a switch because Im tall and I have a roll cage in my car and with my cage with the foam on it sometimes its hard to see out of my rearview. I want to be able to flip a switch and be able to see behind me if this is possible. Also Car play would be nice. Are there any carplay head units out there for cheaper than $500? Kind of on a budget and I don't want to turn this into a $1000 project. It would be nice to be able to use my Nav app and whatnot. Any input would be appreciated as I am out of the car stereo loop for a while now.

The backup camera switch is easy. The system is set up to turn on the camera when it sees positive voltage from the backup lights circuit. So all you have to do is splice in an additional power source (ignition controlled since you would only need it when the car is running) to the backup light signal wire. Put a separate switch inline in your new power feed and mount it someplace convenient. Whenever you turn the switch on, the power will fool the head unit into thinking the backup lights are on so it will activate the camera.

That's what I was thinking just don't have any experience with the newer radios and wasn't sure if that would work.

One thing I forgot to mention... you should add a diode to the actual backup light feed to prevent current feedback so that your new switched power doesn't turn on the backup lights as well as the camera.

I was about to ask about that after reading the first comment.

Very cool thank you guys. Anyone have any input on which radio? Like I said I'd like to get something on the lower price side of things. Audio and stuff isn't that important to me I just want to be able to use navi and have a screen for a backup camera. Aux in would be nice and Bluetooth would be nice as well

Stick with the major brand names and then just look for a model that has the features you want in the price range you need. Pioneer and Kenwood are the leaders in double DIN but Alpine and JVC also produce good products. Personally, I prefer Kenwood because they use Garmin navigation and their display and menus seem more user friendly but Pioneer has some better audio features and they still make the best FM tuners.
