Lightbulb Porting Subthump Stealthbox on Gen 5?

2013 ZL1 Coupe

Has anyone ported the stealthbox, namely the Subthump brand driver's side box? I just installed one, and I am interesting in drilling a 'big ol hole' somewhere in it for porting reasons. It's quite a angular shaped box though, so, not sure if it's really worthwhile (or feasible.)

Has anyone done it with this type of stealthbox? Where did you put the hole?

P.S. This was my own mod of the Subthump box. I used components off of a Dual brand self-powered box and "threw" them into the Subthump. Works great. Looks nice. Didn't break the bank either...

I would generally advise against drilling a "big ole hole" in a sub box to act as a vent. True vented enclosures are tuned for performance at a certain frequency based on many factors including box size, woofer specs, and port length. A hole in the enclosure as described will not benefit the sub in any way and will make the tight punchy bass that a sealed enclosure produces and make it sloppy, to say the least, and potentially add some unwanted noise from turbulence around the port.

If you were to vent the box correctly, you could gain some output at certain frequencies. This would involve inserting a tube of sorts (PVC works) into the drilled hole at a prescribed length based on the factors mentioned above. There is software out there to calculate tube/port length. The last I used was WinISD by linear team. You'll probably want to tune to a frequency between 30-45hz. In general, the longer the tube, the lower the frequency it targets.

everything he said plus, if the 5th gen box is anything like the 4th gen in terms a cubic footage, it is TOO SMALL a box to port at all, ported boxes generally need to be about twice the size of a sealed enclosure.

Well, I am (obviously) looking for someone who has done what I asked, I am very familiar with the 'what is', and 'how-to' part.

I have many sub enclosures (both in cars, and in home, etc) that simply sound better with port vs without. Why else would anyone go through such trouble?

And, yes, making a port in any enclosure is nothing more than 'drilling a big ol hole'. Sure there are other technical details involved. But in a nutshell, it is nothing more than drilling a 'big ol hole' (for lack of a better term) and putting a sleeve or some sort of 'vent tube'. Sure, the proper size, etc etc are important. But that is not what I asked.

I was mainly seeking an answer from someone who has done this (what I asked) in this specific application, everything else, I am already familiar with.

Good effort though. :/

Hate to sound like a d*ck, and I know you guys don't know what other people know about 'things', but I already know quite well about what it is I am in only 'interested' in possibly doing- because I am already very familiar with the concept. My question was: Has anyone else done this in this specific vehicle, in this type of box, and where did they do it.

If not, fine. Doesn't hurt to ask. That is what these forums are good for.

OK then lets put it simply, NO ONE does it because your NOT SUPPOSED TO port a sealed enclosure, since ported boxes NEED to be LARGER. it is that simple and if you know enough about boxes to know how to build a port you should know WHY it's not a good idea to even consider trying to port something so small (0.95 cu.ft. according to what I looked up), I can't even see where you would include a PROPERLY sized port opening in a box that small.

Dave without getting crazy technical, for your application I would say it is not a feasible solution.
