Default Blurry backup camera.

My license plate mounted backup camera is Crystal clear during the day but at night it has a couple of white clouds? Is this a lighting issue or just a crappy camera? The license plate light is actually right on top of the camera. Thank you in advance.

That's a good thought but not in this case because the car stays inside and doesn't get wet.

I suspect it's a lighting problem. Can you put some sort of shield to block the license plate light from hitting the camera lens? A small flat piece of plastic might be sufficient. Then the camera would adjust its exposure based on the light provided by the backup lights rather than the license light that's right above it.

Thank you for chiming in whitebird00, you are always a wealth of information. I like your idea, tell me if this would work? I was thinking of having my 12volt guy rig up my license plate light to turn off when my reverse lights go on if that's possible?

It would be quite simple to do that. Just install a standard (Bosch style) relay that is triggered by the backup lights into the license light circuit. The license light power (brown wire) would be cut and connected to terminals 30 (power from light switch) and 87A (output to license lamp). Then terminals 86 and 85 would be connected to backup light power (light green wire) and a suitable ground respectively. Under normal conditions, there would be no interruption of the license plate circuit and the light would work normally. In reverse, the relay would trip when the backup lights turn on and the license light circuit would be interrupted, turning off the license light.

Still, I would look into shielding the light first because it is an easy thing to try to see if it solves the display problem and it doesn't involve modifying any wiring.
