The problems you are describing are electrical - even before you crank the car. The starter solenoid is only one component involved in cranking the engine; after the relay allows it to come to the party.
The ignition switch controls the relay and all the other electrical functions associated with turning the key. The actual ignition switch is bolted to the very bottom of the column and is connected to the key cylinder with rods and linkages:

I would get under the dash and check that switch out. Also check to make sure you are not getting the security messages associated with a VATS problem, but I suspect that you are not since some of the problems go away by waiting and trying.
