2002 Camaro intermittent start issues

Default 2002 Camaro intermittent start issues

Need some help fella's. 2002 Camaro, original owner but i'm having some start issues. I have an Incon twin turbo kit with a scavenge pump. When i turn the key on the pump, dash light, fuel pump and auto headlamps would all come on and the car turns over when turned to start. But lately I turn the key on and the dash lights turn on but nothing else then anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes everything would finally come on and i could start the car. Now it still does the same but now I have to hold the key to start the car and when it does i can't let go, i have to hold the key in between accessory and start and when i let go everything turns off a couple times. When i try this a couple times it finally stays running. I've already tried the ignition relay but didnt' change anything. Could it be the ignition lock cylinder? Really baffling me.

My first instinct is that the battery can't handle the power demand. That's the first thing I'd get tested. A load test at autozone takes an hour or so and doesn't cost anything. That'll at least rule out a potential cause.

I should have also put in there it has a new Optima red top! Just weird i have to play around with the key to get it to work sometimes. And when its warm, works everytime. And i've also tried both keys, just in case it was VATS or something.

I thought I did a good search before i posted but my car is doing this....
looks like i'll try the starter solenoid tonight

Moving to Stereo and Electronics.

The problems you are describing are electrical - even before you crank the car. The starter solenoid is only one component involved in cranking the engine; after the relay allows it to come to the party.

The ignition switch controls the relay and all the other electrical functions associated with turning the key. The actual ignition switch is bolted to the very bottom of the column and is connected to the key cylinder with rods and linkages:




I would get under the dash and check that switch out. Also check to make sure you are not getting the security messages associated with a VATS problem, but I suspect that you are not since some of the problems go away by waiting and trying.

Check the starter relay in the fuse box closer to driver headlight.
