MECP certification i was just curious if anyone on the board was MECP certified in installation. im about to start studying for the basic installer exam and was wondering if anyone had any feedback on the test, test requirements, etc. i'm really excited about all of this, but i only want to have to take this test once. i guess we'll see how it goes.. I am MECP cartified and it has been so long since I took the Intaller level test I can't remember what was on it. Learn resistor color codes, how to correctly wire a SPDT relay, how to test and identify all of the different doorlock systems, and if you are an experianced installer with 1 year or so experiance just get a good nights rest.

MECP certified Installer First Class here , the basic test test is really not too bad , especially if you have any experience and sat down and actually read the study guide .I'm out of the install biz now , building new trucks tends to be more stable and profitable .

yea ive read through the study guide to get the basic jist from it... its mostly electrical stuff, with basic install knowledge & shop saftey, which makes sense. the test shouldnt be too bad, im just anxious. 150 questions spread out into 3 sections, each section is comprised of 5 topics, with 3 hrs to take it.

i was certified, however I let my cert. lapse b/c I'm not installing anymore. I would pay attention to Ohm's Law, Resistor color codes, and Relays. Here's the way I remembered color codes:
Bad (Black) -0
Boys (Brown) -1
Rape (Red) -2
Our (Orange) -3
Young (Yellow) -4
Girls (Green) -5
Behind (Blue) -6
Victory (Violet) -7
Garden (Gray) -8
Walls (White) -9
Get (Gold) - 5% tolerance
Some (Silver) -10% tolerance
Now (None) -
Bad (Black) -0
Boys (Brown) -1
Rape (Red) -2
Our (Orange) -3
Young (Yellow) -4
Girls (Green) -5

I've heard that one too, but the one I quoted my dad taught me (hence the "victory garden walls") and that one was the one that stuck. I think there is another version about beer, or kegs or something...

Master Installer.
MECP is pretty much a joke. A monkey could get the basic certification, it means nothing. The only thing that shows is experience. You can read a book and learn how to put a radio in, but when you get in the shop and break the dash taking it out, we laugh. You don't need to know the resistor codes for 99% of the work you do.
Putting an alarm in, is just experience. Know where to put the brain, where not to, tape all your wires, don't leave slack, run them along the factory harnesses.
Easy stuff, but just takes experience.
MECP is a joke. I don't even require my other installers to take it. I only have mine so I can hang it up front so people who don't know any different can feel "safe"

yea i pretty much feel the same way... im just taking it because my shop wants me to, and because it will increase my hours and pay. more hours means more experience, which is ultimately what i want. oh and we get to put a patch on our shirts....
