Default Gauge Cluster

I've got a 02 V6 bird. The charging and fuel gauge do not work, but sometimes the charging does. On startup the charging guage will read about 10 volts, I know this is wrong because I've replaced the alternator recently and have verified with a volt tester on the battery. But after some driving the charging gauge will read correctly and stay correct for the rest of the drive. The fuel guage just doesn't work. 99% of the time it just reads empty (full tank btw) but every now and then it'll "dance" where it flicks to full and empty and everything in between. every other gauge is working, I'm not too sure what could cause just these 2 to fail.

A Handful of stepper motors used to be cheap on Ebay... You might get a small tip iron, and solder in a new stepper motor. Sometimes you can be both cheap AND lucky.

So the stepper motor could be the issue? That would cause just 2 of the gauges to malfunction?

Stepper motor failures were common on early 2000s GM trucks, but these fbodies use some funky air core thing and not a stepper motor.

Gas gauge could be a bad sender and/or wiring to it. Looks like the fuel level sender signal goes to the PCM, which then sends the fuel level via class 2 data bus to the cluster's internal logic.
Here is a link to that diagram: https://charm.li/Pontiac/2002/Firebi...0Level%20Gage/

Volt meter also goes through the cluster logic. Link to the diagram with the volt meter.

So you could have a bad cluster logic, but there isn't likely anything you can do to DIY fix it.

Could try another cluster in it just to see if it behaves normally or not. But that requires having another 99-02 fbody cluster around to plug in and try.

I see, thanks for the info man, I'll keep farting around with it to see if I can get at least the fuel gauge working.

Fuel tank harness passes through the body under the rear driver side seat cushion fyi. You could always take a look there for damage.
